OK, I read this article today and at first thought it was an April Fools joke, but it is December 20th so they might just be serious. The title says it all "UK report rays robots will have rights".
This report is really fascinating and spooky at the same time:
“If we make conscious robots they would want to have rights and they probably should,” said Henrik Christensen, director of the Centre of Robotics and Intelligent Machines at the Georgia Institute of Technology."
So, humans grant rights to robots (which are NOT human or have a soul/spirit) which inevitably leads to this amazing statement:
“If granted full rights, states will be obligated to provide full social benefits to them including income support, housing and possibly robo-healthcare to fix the machines over time,”
That is just plain weird and whacky.
Now, during the reading of this article I pondered something else. WHO GRANTS HUMAN RIGHTS?
In the Declaration of Independence it says that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." So, the US was built upon the fact that our Creator grants rights, not the government.
I see many instances where people are looking to the government as the entity to grant rights. Not much, really, is granted by the government, it is protected or it is taken away, that is the only choices they have.
Now, I'm going to get off my right wing, wacko, anti-government pedestal and get to work....
