Vacation time in the US

I was on a conference call with co-workers from the US, Australia, the UK and the Netherlands. Everyone was reviewing their time off for the holidays and I noticed a big difference in the time off patterns. I'm not going to get in to deep thoughts about this today (comparing productivity, income, etc.) as that is not the point. My co-workers (in all countries) are all very hard working, smart and productive individuals. It is just interesting to look at the difference.

Australia: "Don't call anyone here between Christmas Day and New Years, we will not be here. We shut down"

Europe: "I'm taking off the month of August"

America: "I'm off Friday"....

Interestingly it seems that other countries tend to take their time off in large lumps. In the US if I'm out for more than a week I start to panic. Maybe next year I'll try a long vacation. We do hope to return to Ecuador next summer, maybe we will stay an extra week or so!?

I hope everyone is having a good Christmas season so far, ours has been great. The weather is ridiculously warm and I'm working like a dog but I love the Christmas season.
