Never a truer word was spoken....

I saw this story yesterday in the Houston newspaper. What a great, GREAT statement by the guy who won the lottery: "To all the millions who bought tickets and didn't win, I thank you very much." I'm sure the state thanks them too. Interesting that the headline uses the word "losers".

I've never understood how those "millions" of people who bought those lottery tickets like paying voluntary tax. I pay enough taxes as it is today (working on my TurboTax program right now) to in no way want to pay more on purpose.

You know, if I'm not careful with this 'complaining' about taxes, I may end up putting up a sign in my yard like the one I see on East Cherokee drive. It is a giant wooden sign with paragraphs of complaints about taxes and it is signed "Conservative Man". I'd take a picture of the sign but I'm afraid I may get shot!

We've been talking about finances at Ridgestone lately and I've enjoyed the refresher course on Biblical financial concepts and love to be able to give to the church and other ministries. That, however, is done out of love and gratitude.

I can complain about taxes but I am obliged to pay them as you can see from the passage below. Doesn't mean I can't have an opinion about them however! :-)

Paying Taxes to Caesar (Matthew 22:15-22)

15Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

18But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius, 20and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"

21"Caesar's," they replied.
Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

22When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.
