Teresa and I find ourselves in the position of seeking a new church home again, a lot quicker than we had imagined. We've never had to leave a church in 'mid-stream', only when we moved to another town has that happened.
At this point we have no idea where we are going to end up serving and worshiping but it is very interesting to see other church's from an outsiders viewpoint. We've been to 3 other churches the past few weeks. Next week, however, we will be a big church in Talladega, AL called the Aaron's 499.
Church #1: Met in a high school and easy to find. The parking crew all huddled together as we drove by looking for a parking spot. Signs pointed us to the visitor's lot and when we walked by the huddled parking lot crew they said 'hello'. Once inside the building we went to the table marked 'Information'. The two ladies working the table didn't have time for us, they were too busy talking. We stood there, I shuffled papers on the table and nobody helped. Inside the worship area was nice but the pastor started his sermon by telling a joke about ladies measurements, 36-24-36 and Teresa and I rather lost interest after that.
Church #2: This one met in an old K-Mart. Somebody has a lot of money because it just started but the facilities were mighty impressive. People greeted you, lot's of energy, free coffee and water, an expresso bar and all. Once inside the worship are it was nice, awesome stage, lighting and sound. Once the service started, however, I felt like I was at an NBA game. The pastor/announcer/DJ ran in from the back with a microphone and made people in the audience jump up and down, yell stuff and generally get all hyped up.The music was very good, lot's and lot's of songs. Now, admittedly, I'm not emotional enough sometimes about my worship of the Lord but this was a little strange. The sermon was on tithing, which cracked me up as the pastor said they've never talked about it prior to that particular Sunday.
Church #3: This one meets in a middle school gym and had a nice greeter guy out front. We stopped at the information table and they were nice, tried to get us to sign up for a trip to Africa this summer but didn't ask if we were new or if they could help us with questions. When we went to the gym the same greeter guy out front was at the door passing out the program. He's talented!! The worship music was all Passion style, not our type in general, but was led by a very gifted guy. The 'pastor' is a video feed from a local mega-church. I thought I might like that but it was a little strange, the stage was empty and dark while we we all stared at a big screen.
We plan on taking advantage of this time off from a church home and just check out some of the TONS of little churches around this area. Once we find a church home, and I hope that is soon, we will jump right in with both feet again.
