I've become an environmentalist now AND I'm a conservative. What brought me to this you ask? Well, since it never rains here I thought we would install a 'water catchment system' on our house to capture what little rain does happen to fall here in Woodstock. We are behind in our rainfall for the past two years, the lakes are drying up, the yard cannot be watered anymore and the prediction is for a dry winter.
Now, 'water catchment system' is a fancy phrase that stands for "two garbage cans, some pvc pipe, glue, sealant and a couple of brass faucets". We've taken the downspout from our roof and re-directed it into two 32 gallon plastic garbage cans so when it rains we can have up to 60 gallons of water available to water our plants, flower beds, etc. If this works well we may just buy a big water container (a few hundred gallons perhaps?) and then we could put a pump in the tank and actually water our yard and use the water for other things as well.
Let's see how this works.
Mother earth smiles on us I'm sure.
