On Thursday we took off and drove up back roads to Asheville, NC then on to our first stop in Banner Elk, North Carolina to stay at a friend house in the Sugar Mountain ski area. It was a nice drive up, lots of nice color still left on the leaves and when we got there it started to snow. We unpacked and went to get some Italian food at a local place and the snow started to blow sideways and in huge flakes. It didn't mess up the roads but it stuck to the ground, probably 1/2 inch or so. We went back to the house and lit a nice fire, watched a movie and stayed warm!!

Friday's adventure found us driving up the back roads of NC for a while and then to Blacksburg, VA. I went to Blacksburg a few times back in the 1980's to recruit college students from Virginia Tech because I remembered it was nice, lots of mountains, etc. When we arrived I realized that what I thought were mountains were just nice hills. Living in Houston so long must have really messed up my perception if I thought those hills were mountains!! We looked at the campus then decided to head to Charlottesville, VA for the evening. On the way to Charlottesville we took a few hours ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. That was a great drive and recommended if you are not in a big hurry. We went to their historic downtown area and walked around looking for some food but didn't see anything we liked so we went towards the University of Virginia campus and found a nice little place to eat and relax a while.

Saturday found us driving up the middle of Virginia, through places like Manassas and Leesburg, close to Washington DC, into Maryland and into Pennsylvania towards our planned stay in Hershey, PA.
More to come.....
