Teresa and I have always loved log cabins. We go to the mountains and look at new log cabins on a regular basis. We decided to go up to Jasper, Georgia and attend a seminar by Kuhn Brothers log home builders. We wanted to learn more since have no idea what a log home costs, how it is built, what are the benefits, challenges and other questions you might have. Well, we've answered the questions now and have moved off of the log cabin idea for a future home. It is expen$ive!!!!
The seminar was held inside a log home located in a new master planned community outside of Jasper called The Preserve at Sharp Mountain. It is a beautiful location just 1 hour or so north of Atlanta.
The homesites are impressive, large and most have awesome views of the local mountains. I'm not talking Rocky Mountain heights here but it is beautiful nonetheless. Most of the homes were at about the 2,000 foot elevation. It is nice and almost nice enough to consider buying a home in but... we still want to go to Boone, NC in the long run. After the seminar we headed out to eat at a little restaurant in Marble Hill, Georgia called Fireside Cafe. Teresa had purchased a coupon from Restaurant.com which saved us a ton of money. It was a nice little place and looking out the window we could see signs for a place called Big Canoe. The sun was going to set soon so we decided to take a quick look at the community. Once inside I could not believe how beautiful this place was and that we had never found it before in all of our adventures. It is a huge, master planned community similar to The Woodlands (in Texas) for those of you in Houston, except it has hills!
We found a few model homes to look at and they were the best looking, best built homes we have seen in Georgia. The floorplans were great, the master bedroom on the main floor with the guest rooms and a second living area BELOW in the terrace level. They had screened in porches, fireplaces in both living areas, in the screened in porch and some had a fireplace in the master. This is exactly the floor plan and style Teresa and I have been looking for. Since the sun was setting and the local on-site agent was locking all the doors we had to leave. We will return, however, and get some good ideas for our future home in the mountains!!
